High Quality Cable Attachments can be accessory work gold!

One of those little bits of gym kit that can make a cable machine considerably more useful. The Phoenix Fitness Ankle Straps are a padded pair of cuffs designed to attach to a cable machine, giving you a comfortable way to perform exercises such as cable kickbacks, hip abductions and leg curls.

If you’re gradually building out your setup, they’re a really affordable addition to our Cable Pulley Attachments range. They can also be used with suitable band setups, so they’re worth considering alongside our Resistance Bands if you train at home without a full cable machine.

They’re particularly popular for Glute Training, but we think simply calling them “ankle straps” actually undersells how useful they can be, as they are a lot more versatile than that.

What exercises can I use cable ankle straps for?

The obvious one is the Cable Glute Kickback. Secure the cuff around your ankle, attach it to a low cable and you can work each side independently without needing a dedicated glute machine.

They can be used for exercises such as standing hip abductions and cable leg curls. This offers an easy way to add more lower-body work to a cable machine or Home Gym. For Beginners especially, we like accessories like this because you don’t necessarily need another large or expensive piece of equipment. A small attachment can give you several new ways to use the cable machine you already have.

Can you use ankle straps around your wrists?

This is where you unlock the secret to a host new exercise for the Ankle Straps.  Though many market these as “Ankle straps” for lower-body workouts. In recent times, thanks to Body-Builders like Jeff Nippard, many gym-users are now starting to use them on the wrists to prevent grip being their limiting factor for Upper-Body Exercises Cable Lateral Raises

Why? When you’re holding a normal D-handle, your hand and forearm are still working to grip the attachment. For some people, grip starts becoming uncomfortable or fatigued before the muscle they’re actually trying to train has had enough.

Putting a suitably secure cuff around the wrist can reduce how much you need to physically grip the attachment. With a secure cuff, the lift lets you focus on the shoulder and the trained muscle.

We always recommend starting light. Ensure the cuff is properly secured. This is an alternative way of performing the movement, not necessarily better.

What does Liam Bud think of the Phoenix Fitness Ankle Straps?

I think ankle straps are one of the most underrated cable machine attachments you can own.

The obvious use is glute work. Mrs B has put plenty of reps through these doing cable kickbacks and, let’s just say, the results have been noticeable!

Strap one around your ankle and connect it to a low cable. It trains your glutes and other lower-body muscles. You won’t need loads of equipment.

But here’s the bit people don’t talk about enough. You can also use an ankle cuff around your wrist for certain cable exercises. Take a cable lateral raise as an example. When you’re holding a Universal Cable Handle, sometimes your grip or forearms start getting tired before the muscle you’re actually trying to train.

Putting a secure cuff around your wrist removed grip from your mind, so you can concentrate more on moving through the shoulder and working your side delts. It’s something you’ll often see more Experienced Lifters and Body-Builders doing when they want to make the target muscle the limiting factor rather than their grip.
