Description
Weightlifting Straps That Give Your Grip Some Backup
These Gymist lasso lifting straps are made from dense cotton webbing with silicone woven directly into the underside of the strap, creating additional grip against the bar when you wrap in.
And that’s the bit we really rate. . . The additional layer of silicone makes these feel thicker and more substantial than a basic cotton strap, while the silicone also helps create extra friction between the strap and the bar. Add padded wrist support and reinforced stitching and you’ve got a really solid pair of straps for deadlifts, rows, shrugs, RDLs and other heavy pulling exercises.
Simple bit of kit. Really well made. And one of my personal favourites (Liam) in the Buds range.
What are weightlifting straps used for?
Weightlifting straps help when your grip starts failing before the muscles you’re actually trying to train. For example, your back and hamstrings may still have plenty left during a deadlift, row or Romanian deadlift, but your hands and forearms are struggling to hold onto the bar. Lasso lifting straps wrap around your wrist and then around the bar, helping you maintain your grip so you can keep focusing on the movement.
They’re particularly useful for:
- Deadlifts and Romanian deadlifts
- Barbell and dumbbell rows
- Shrugs and rack pulls
- Lat pull-downs and cable rows
- Other heavy pulling exercises
They shouldn’t replace building your grip strength altogether, but they’re a very useful training tool when grip is stopping you properly training the muscles you’re targeting.
Are silicone lifting straps better than normal cotton straps?
Not necessarily for everybody. A straightforward pair of cotton lifting straps can do a perfectly good job, which is exactly why we sell those too. What makes these Gymist straps different is the combination of dense cotton webbing and silicone woven into the underside of the strap.
That silicone creates additional friction where the strap meets the bar, while the thicker cotton gives them a substantial, supportive feel. If you just want a simple, affordable first pair of lifting straps, one of our standard cotton options may be all you need. If you want something with more grip built into the strap itself, these are the pair we’d look at.
The View of Liam at Buds Fitness of the Gymist Deadlift straps
Sometimes this section needs a balanced explanation. This one is pretty simple. I loves these straps.
We’ve handled and sold a lot of lifting straps over the years, and there are plenty of perfectly good traditional cotton straps available. You absolutely don’t need the most expensive pair on the market just to start using straps.
But these feel different.
The cotton webbing is dense and substantial, rather than thin and floppy, and when you turn them over you can see the feature that really makes them stand out. Silicone is woven into the underside of the strap.
Once you’ve wrapped them around the bar, that gives you extra friction exactly where you want it. You also get neoprene padding around the wrist, which helps keep things comfortable once the weight starts getting heavier.
If you just need an inexpensive traditional cotton strap, we’d happily recommend one of our other options instead. But if you’re asking which lasso strap in the range we personally rate most highly, this is it.
